After Act 2: Do you think the agreement between Cyrano and Christian is practical? What problems do you foresee in it? Why does Cyrano make this agreement with Christian? What will he gain? What is your impression of Roxanne after her conversation with Cyrano? Is she deserving of Cyrano's love? Explain.
During and after Act 3: Describe Cyrano's mixed feelings when he speaks to Roxane unseen. Why might be be both happy and sad? An idealist is someone who follows his or her beliefs beyond the point of practicality and who acts as if the world were better than it really is. From what you have seen of Cyrano so far, show how he is an idealist.
Do you think a love like Cyrano's is actually greater than a love like Christian's? Why or why not?

I think that Cyrano has (as i learned in bio) bipolar syndrome. This means that you can be really happy one day and the next day you're extremely depressed. Cyrano has many mood changes, I think. One day he's mean to everyone and kills some people, and the next day, he's sweet and nice and writing love notes to Roxanne. I think that by the end of the play, Cyrano will figure things out, but right now he is very confused.
ReplyDeleteAmy:)
It seems like Roxane is kind of using Cyrano just so she can be with Christian. Since Cyrano loves her, he will do anything for her. I feel bad for Cyrano because he is in love with Roxane, but she is in love with Christian. Sometimes it seems like Cyrano has mood swings. He is happy one minute and then sad or mad the next.
ReplyDelete-Abby
In this act I just figured that Cyrano was an even better guy. I thought it was amazing when he was all excited because Roxane wanted to see him. He thought that she was going to tell him that she was in love with him, and he was in love with her. But then when she told him that she was in love with Christian, he was crushed and I felt really bad for him. And then to top it all off, he agreed to protect that man that she loved. this just put it over the edge and made me feel like he was just an awesome guy. All in all, he is just a great person.
ReplyDelete~Nathan Reding~
After reading act 3, it seems that Cyrano really is a good guy. He cares about Roxane so much that he agreed to help protect the one she loves, Christian. And Cyrano really does help Christian. He tells him what to say to Roxane so he can win her heart. I think that Cyrano was crushed when he was talking to Roxane when she was on the balcony. Roxane was saying how much she loved him, but she thought she was talking to Christian. This just shows how much courage Cyrano has.
ReplyDelete~Amy
I do not think the agreed arrangement between Christian and Cyrano is practical. I believe that Cyrano will at one point become to overcome with his love for Roxane that, while he is helping Christian, he will reveal himself. After all, the only reason Cyrano agreed to help Christian is because he loves Roxane, and wants her to be happy and also that he knows that Roxane will fall for his words, not Christian's appearance. Maybe he thinks that Roxane will be so overwhelmed with her love for "Christian's" words that he will be safe to reveal himself and she will not care about his unattractiveness. After reading act 2, I think that Roxane is a little shallow and judges a book by its cover too much. This is because she thinks that because Christian is handsome that he will be intelligent and witty as well. This causes me to believe that she's not really deserving of Cyrano's love, because she apparently values appearance too much.
ReplyDelete-'drienne
After talking with Roxane, Cyrano is very sad that she is still in love with Christian. But he is also elated because he knows that she is not really in love with Christian, but in love with Cyrano's words. I think Cyrano's love is greater than Christian's because Christian's love is shallow and cares only about appearances, while, Cyrano's love extends deeper. Cyrano loves Roxane for her intelligence, charm, wit, AS WELL AS her beauty. Christian's shallow love will be short-lived, while a love like CYrano's can last an entire lifetime.
ReplyDelete-'drienne
Ok i haven't started act three yet but here's what i have to say about act two...
ReplyDeletei think Roxanne sounds like a really kind, gentle person and i do think she is deserving of Cyrano's love. however, i don't think that she will like how aggressive Cyrano can be. As for the agreement between Cyrano and Christian, i think that Cyrano will take advantage of this agreement in some way in order to make Roxanne love him. Cyrano is to gain looks from this agreement but i don't see how that's going to work out.
*HANNAH*
Roxanne whatever is annoying. No, she doesn't deserve Cyrano. She deserves some creepy old man that doesn't care for her, no offense to creepy old men. It just makes me mad that she can look right through Cyrano, and then I wonder if I do that sometimes too. I don't think their agreement is a good plan. It's not right to have an alterior motive like that. Cyrano thinks he's going to gain love and trust, but it his plan falls through, he'll still be left alone and upset.
ReplyDelete-Payton
I honestly think that Christian and Cyrano's plan is going to crash and burn. This is not 2009, they do not have microphones and earpieces to allow them to communicate. Roxanne does not even deserve Cyrano. Cyrano is just too mesmerized by her beauty to notice that. Cyrano gains the confidence that, even though it's Christian she is falling in love with, he knows that it is really him.
ReplyDeleteoh that last comment was me.
ReplyDeleteDAN CUNNINGHAM
If i was Christian I would feel really bad right about now. As soon as he met Cyrano he started making jokes about his nose. He made fun of Cyranos nose for a while, and after he was done Cyrano did him a favor. He told him Roxanne loved him and that she had asked Cyrano to protect him. After this Cyrano gave Chrisitan the letter that he had written to give to Roxanne because Christian was bad with words. Cyrano was nice to Christian even after Christian had made fun of him, this is why Christian should feel bad.
ReplyDelete~Nathan Reding~
In act two i really am getting this vibe that Cyrano is kind of desperate, beyond anything that i'd expect. He really is trying to hard to get Roxanne's attention, with his crazy plan with Christian. I am willing to bet that if he had just talked to Roxanne like he is going to through Christian that he could win her over and she could get past his nose. I think that Cyrano's plan isn't just going to backfire on him, but on Christian as well, ruining his relation with her as well
ReplyDelete(Stephen Laughrun)
Personally, I don't believe that their plan will work out; suppose Christian wants to talk on his own, and forgets what he is going to say. I doubt he'll have a script next to him 24/7. Also, how would Roxane react if she found out about it? Truthfully, it sounds like she really likes Cyrano's words over Christian's good looks, like when he repeatedly said, "I love you" and Roxane kept saying things like, "Where's your passion?" Seems to me that she's falling for Cyrano without knowing that it is him.
ReplyDeleteAs for Roxane herself, I don't really like her. From the sound of the character descriptions, she's supposed to be good-looking. Seems to me all she cares about is having a lover with a good, strong, handsome face, until I read the beginning of Act III. Then, I realised that she is more in love with the romantic words than Christian's good looks. That's how I perceived it, anyways. I still dislike her, and I feel that she isn't deserving of Cyrano's love because she isn't worth his time; she obviously loves someone else, only because he's handsome, and that's the only thing she knows about Christian, other than the fact that he loves her back.
I feel awful for Cyrano... unrequited love must suck. Just knowing you're not loved by a person you like is rotten...
Yeah, I think that the agreement is practical. I mean, if I sucked at speaking to people I had crushes on I would definetly lie and be deceitful to them to make sure they liked me. What could go wrong? That is besides the fact that the person being lied to could figure it out, the person hired could tell thus making everybody hurt very much on the inside, and lets not forget a little thing I call jealousy. I think Cyrano made this decision because he wants to pour his heart out to a woman he loves...in an extremely weird way. He gains the prize of knowing he's wooed a woman that will never love him back. What a great prize.
ReplyDeleteNow, about Roxane. It seems to me like shes a few fries short of a happy meal. She seems like shes the dense one in the nonexistent relationship between her and Cyrano. She doesn't deserve a nice violent guy like Cyrano to love her.
~Sarah D.
After reading act 3 it made me like Cyrano a lot more. I think that it is really sweet of him that he will help Christian talk to Roxane. I don't know if they're plan will end up working out all that well though. I think that it is kind of weird and not good that Christian and Roxane love each other because they obviously don't know eachother that well. It seems like this because because Roxane didn't know the difference between Christian's voice and Cyrano's voice during the balcony part. I also agree with everyone else because i feel bad for Cyrano. Roxane doesn't deserve for Cyrano to love her.
ReplyDelete-Abby Nelson (oh and the comment at the very top was mine too)
Cyrano and Christian’s deception will unavoidably fail. Despite Cyrano's many good qualities, he is extremely prideful. At the beginning of Act 3, it was killing him to have Roxanne think that Christian was a better writer than he. This was only a few hours after their plan’s conception. There is no way that Cyrano will be able to subdue his pride long enough for the plot to reach its conclusion.
ReplyDeleteI think that Cryano and Christian's agreement is a very, very bad idea. I mean that if Roxanne disovers their deception, she will be very unhappy, to say the least. I also think that, because Christian is a bumbling incompetent around women, if ANYTHING at all happens to Cyrano then Christian is in deep trouble. Cyrano can get along without Christain, but if christain losses Cyrano then it will be bad.

I do not think that the agreement is a good idea. I think that it will cause even more problems. It will be very hard to keep it a secret. They will probably get caught lying, and Roxane will end up not loving either of htme because she can not trust them. Cyrano thinks that he will gain Roxane's love, but it is not very practical, because she will have no idea that it is really him she is in love with. I think that Roxane is using Cyrano, and he will end up getting hurt by making this agreement.
ReplyDelete~Nicole
After reading act 3 i'm starting to like Cyrano more. He really isn't as bad as cocky as he was in the first act. Now he's nicer and not as negatively bodacious. Now he actuually tries to help Christian. I thought it was really interesting that he actually kept his mouth shut and let Roxanne and Christian get married. I also liked his act as a loon for De Guiche. that was positive bodacious-ness. I think that confirms my prediction, though, that his plan would backfire and Christian would end up with Roxanne. I was admittedly wrong about Roxanne finding out and getting mad as Christian to.
ReplyDeleteFor now.
(Stephen Laughrun)
I'm starting to feel bad for Cyrano after reading Act 3. He tries to help Christian by talking to Roxane for him, but he's expressing his own feelings. If I was in his position, it be hard for me to agree to talk for someone else when they get all the credit. He's sad because he knows she loves Christian, but happy because she is in love with the words he spoke to her. I think that agreeing to help Christian was a brave thing to do, but Cyrano knew it would benefit him in a way.
ReplyDelete-Kathleen J.
I think that Cyrano is kind of Roxane's servant. What I mean is he does basically what ever she wants him to, and he is doing somethings that will not allow him to date Roxane. He should not help Christian with Roxane, or vise-versa. He should just tell Roxane that the letter was his instead of laying low. He's saying his feelings for Christian instead of for himself, which i don't feel is right. It shows that he is the stronger man though because he will actually talk to her, unlike beach babe Christian who doesn't know how to use his jaw bones.
ReplyDelete$ALEC$
i totally agree with Abby-Roxanne seems sweet and all, but it does kind of appear that she is TOTALLY taking advantage of Cyrano. And the weird thing is Cyrano doesn't seem to care. I guess he just wants Roxanne to appreciate, notice, and acknowledge his presence so he is willing to be used. I don't know that i blame Roxanne, but i think she may be being a little selfish.
ReplyDelete*HANNAH*
I honestly do not see how Cyrano can put up with this. If i was Cyrano, i wouldn't help Christian anymore after he said he did not need my help and then totally failed on his own. It would drive me crazy knowing that, the only reason the girl I'm in love with is in love with another guy, is because I've been telling him what to say. It takes a lot of courage on Cyrano's part to keep helping out Christian. I'm predicting that in the future of this play, something will happen in Arras and somehow, Cyrano will end up with Roxanne.
ReplyDeleteDAN CUNNINGHAM
I really don't understand why Cyrano would want to put himself through this much pain. First Roxane tells him she doesn't love him, then he agrees to help the man whom she loves? By helping Christian, it's only going to make that relationship stronger for him, not Cyrano. He might have some personal gain by knowing that Roxane is truly in love with his words, but Roxane is in love with Chistian's face. She just assumed that since he is a beautiful person, he has a beautiful mind as well. Christian is qute cunning, but he is shy when it comes to Roxane. If Cyrano helped at all he should help him express the love he has for her himself not write letters for him because it's not his voice and that is going to cause a lot of problems later.
ReplyDelete-Sadie
After reading Act 3, when Christian and Roxane kiss, Cyrano talks about how it's difficult to know she's kissing another man, yet she's also, "kissing his words." If Cyrano plans on getting Roxane, that would mean her having to find out Cyrano was the brain and Christian was just the puppet. Doesn't he think Roxane will be mad, therefore NOT wanting to be with Cyrano? Some men just don't think. He believe is the phrase, love conquers all. But what if the love is only on one side? I think he needs to be a little more realistic and a little less love-struck. Christian's love for Roxane is on the outside. He could very well like her personality aswell, but that relationship could never last. Cyrano's love is deep, but that relationship seems like it to wouldn't last.
ReplyDelete-Payton
i can totally see how Cyrano would be happy and sad while blindly talking to Roxane. He is finally able to tell her how he honestly feels about her which should definitely make him happy. However, Roxane thinks that this is Christian talking and she is speaking of her love for Christian, not for Cyrano. Thats gotta hurt. Also- i can't say that i believe Cyrano's love is stronger than Christian's. Cyrano definitely expresses his love in a stronger way than Christian does, but Christian still really does love Roxane. Just because he cant/ wont elaborate on his love for Roxane doesn't mean it isn't as strong as Cyrano's love.... just a thought.
ReplyDelete*HANNAH*
No, I don't think that the agreement between Cyrano and Christian is very practical. I think that Roxane will find out what they are doing and end up not liking either of them. Their is an episode like this on every t.v sitcom out there, or so it seems. I think that Christian will be with Roxane at some point without Cyrano beside him and then he won't have anything to say so then Roxane will figure out their plan. I am not really sure why Cyrano would put up with this agreement with Christian. I think that he does it just so that he can spend more time with Roxane. -Sarah S.
ReplyDeleteI think it must be very hard for Cyrano to hold up his half of the agreement. He has to watch the women he loves marry another man. He is only helping Christian, and so far he has gotten nothing out of it. I do not know why he continued to help him even after he said he could do it himself. I have started to like Cyrano more than I did in the beginning. I think that he is more kind and he really cares about Roxane.
ReplyDelete~Nicole
My old art teacher, Mrs. Stowman, whom I am a good friend of, had me take a personality test online. I was considered an idealist to a point. I try to look at the good of all things, and take life to the fullest. He is most certainly an idealist, and is very ingenious. Just look at the tall tale he told de Guiche about coming from the moon! It was brilliant, and de Guiche almost fell for it. His plan is far from being practical. He seems to see a little good in everyone, in spite of his looks.
ReplyDeleteI felt so upset when Roxane married Christian; I honestly can say that his love is not as strong as Cyrano's. Cyrano pretty much just gave up the woman he loved, just to see her happy. That's an honorable and noble thing to do. If I had to give up the one I loved, it would really be hard to do. But if they were truly happy, I might be able to do it, although that would be hard. However, he sees that Roxane is happy, and that would make him happy.
Also, I didn't quite understand de Guiche's letter. I found it to be a little confusing, as to why de Guiche wanted to have Christian marry Roxane. I mean, didn't de Guiche want to have an affair with her? He's married, but I don't exactly see how this would be more convenient for him. Wouldn't getting past Christian make it harder?
Cyrano must feel so hurt right now. The woman that he loves and has known forever, is marrying someone else. Cyrano practically talked to Roxane for Christian. Cyrano has to have a lot of gut to let Roxane and Christian get married without saying anything about him helping Christian. As Roxane called Cyrano "a brother" to her, it seems as though he is fitting the brotherly role quite well. He only wants the best for her and doesn't want her to get hurt. Will Cyrano be able to keep his love for Roxane hidden while seeing her married to Christian? ~Emily
ReplyDeleteI think the agreement between Cyrano and Christian isn't practical. In the end Roxanne doesn't truly love either of them. I can foresee Cyrano becoming jealous of Christian getting all the praise and breaking the secret. I can also foresee that when Roxanne and Christian meet up that Christian will not be smooth at all. I don't believe that Roxanne is deserving of Cyrano's love because she is attracted to looks to easily.
ReplyDeleteI can see how a gentle guy like Cyrano would feel sad that Roxane doesn't recognize his love for her. Of course I can also see a miraculous way out of this tough situation. Maybe something like telling the truth. I et he would be happy though that he finally gets to pour out his heart to a woman he has loved forever and is about to let her get married to another guy who couldn't compose free verse.
ReplyDeleteThis play s s thick with irony my vision fogs over when I'm reading it. This play revolves around dramatic irony. This guy secretly loves this girl and makes all the wrong decisions to win her heart. Good job there, Cyrano, You'll get her heart for sure now. The verbal irony is there for mostly comic relief. I also enjoyed the part where I found out that sarcasm is meant to hurt. So ha to all those people who said I was perpetually sarcastic. I'm only perpetually verbally ironic. Oh, and I guess Cyrano isn't too bipolar and all. I'm sure if you dig really, really deep you might find a nice guy down there...really deep.
~Sarah. D
I don't think that Roxane is quite so undeserving of Cyrano's love. Although, She is highly judgmental, she is infatuated with the Christian that Cyrano and Christian have created. She is sure that this Christian is her only suitor. Cyrano does a lot for Roxane, and she is not unappreciative. She says she "loves him like a brother". Roxane really has had no indication that Cyarno loves her and that she is hurting him. Its really Cyarno's fault that he has been hurt when he kept all traces of his feelings for Roxane deeply buried.
ReplyDeleteI do not think that Christian deserves Roxane's love. I also think that Roxane should maybe just stop and think for awhile, she is way ahead of herself. She thinks that Christian is everything she could ever want. She doesn't really even know him!!!!! She has high expectations too because she knows what her cousin would say and how poetic it would be. I just think that Roxane needs to slow down and think over everything she is doing and think about what she could do. Is it the best thing for her??
ReplyDelete~Kathleen Meek
Cyrano has mixed feelings when talking under the balcony. He knows that he must speak as Christian, in order to keep his promise. Also he is happy that he gets to speak to Roxanne about love. On the other hand he really wants to tell Roxanne that its him. He stumbles and almost says that but then recovers. I believe that Cyrano's love is greater then Christian's because it's deeper then looks, he's known her for longer. Plus Cyrano truly speaks from his heart.
ReplyDeleteI think that it must have been extremely for Cyrano to talk to Roxane about how much he loves her, and she doesn't even know it is him. Cyrano might like it because he thinks that this is as close as he is going to get to Roxane. He would be sad because he knows that she thinks Christian is talking to her, not Cyrano. Cyrano is an idealist because he thinks that while being Christian's spokes-person, he at leasts get to be near and talk to Roxane. In actuality, he is hurting his own chances of Roxane loving him because the more he talks for Christian, the more Roxane falls in love with Christian. -Sarah S.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Cyrano can win back Roxane if he works for it and shows her that he is actually the one who wrote the letter and the one who was talking to her on the balcony. He also shouldn't help Christian because that doesn't help his chances. I like Cyrano but he's kind of a wuss. Because he won't tell her that he loves her, he is just doing it for Christian. De Guiche is beginning to annoy me because he won't leave anyone alone he is way too nosy. He just needs to stop going after Roxane, he is failing anyway .:)
ReplyDelete$ALEC$
I think Cyrano enjoyed talking to Roxanne. He got to express his true feelings to her but at the same time he wished that Roxanne knew it was him and didn't think it was Christian. I feel bad for him because he doesn't look good and people judge him on the outside when they should be looking on the inside because that's what really matters. Roxanne loves Christian because of his writing but really she is in love with Cyrano. She just doesn't realize it yet.
ReplyDeleteKatie K. did that last post :)
ReplyDeleteI believe that Cyrano is probably the most selfless person ever. He sacrifices his love for Roxanne by allowing her to marry Christian. He loves his cousin so much that he would give up his love for her. If everyone were a self sacrificing as Cyran, then the world would be a better place. I also think that this agreement between Cyrano and christian will fail. If Cyrano is far away or is dead then christian will fail epicly.

i think that cyrano is a man of great pride, but also is extremely humble. He is able to stand aside as christian trys to get roxane, and he even helps christian because he knows that it will be him winning roxane with his words. not christian winning. He will try and win her through christian, which to me also shows some selfishness, but as the old saying goes, alls fair in love and war.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that Cyrano has greater feelings for Roxane more than Christian. Since Christian doesn't know what to say around her because he's to nervous he must like her. I feel bad for Christian because he can't express his love like Cyrano can. He has flaws, but everyone has flaws. I don't think he is the enemy in this situation. He probably feels the exact same way about Roxane as Cyrano. We just don't know for sure because he can't speak it.
ReplyDelete-Kathleen J.
I think christian is kind of a loser. He may have the looks, but he seems to be extremely dumb. If anyone should get roxane it should be cyrano. He is doing all the work and getting nothing in return. I dont think its fair that christian gets the rewards that cyrano deserves. Cyrano should man up and tell roxane about their plan. This way he will be able to win roxane.
ReplyDelete@Nick-
ReplyDeleteChristian isn't dumb. He's just really shy. I still dislike his character, just because all he has going for him is his appearance, which I find to be irritating in a way. I know that their plan isn't going to work. Christian is married to Roxane now, so it will make it harder for Christian to speak like Cyrano does!
I'm actually glad he was sent off to war. Christian will probably not make it, as he is a "newbie" in the Cadets. If Christian dies, Cyrano will end up with Roxane! I think I'd be dancing on Christian's grave, the jerk. Seems to me the guy gets everything he wants, other than being able to talk. I feel that Roxane is really in love with Cyrano, though she doesn't realise it yet. I'm pretty sure with that girl's wits, she'll eventually figure it out. ^_^
